Sportoletti’s winery is located near Spello and Assisi, two ancient medieval towns in the region of Umbria in central Italy. It is the hilliest region in Italy, and an extremely green and pristine area, where nature and history blend together. Winemaking traditions in this region reach back to the Etruscans and Romans, but as in Burgundy, grape growing and winemaking were developed and enriched by the monks during Medieval times.

The Sportoletti family has been in agriculture for generations and have always been dedicated to the production of fine wine in Umbria. Brothers Ernesto and Remo have followed their father Vittorio’s teachings on high quality productions. The family owns 50 acres of vineyards and produces two whites and two reds. Thanks to the impressive success of their wines, overall production has soared to 200,000 bottles. Their notable Merlot is produced from old vines planted at Sportoletti more than 50 years ago.

The soil richness, together with innovative methods of production, give Sportoletti’s wines their unique identity and make them among the best expressions of Umbrian winemaking. In 1998, the Sportolettis hired the esteemed world renowned enologist Riccardo Cotarella, marking the start of a highly successful professional relationship.
